The taxi arrived. I sat in the passenger seat, while Stella and Zoe sat in the back.
Stella suddenly asked Zoe, "Zoe, why didn't you tell me you broke up?"
Zoe replied flatly, "I was blind. Just cutting my losses. Nothing to talk about."
Hearing Zoe say this, I couldn't help but glance at the rearview mirror, my eyes meeting hers.
Her eyes held so much I couldn't decipher.
Stella's voice came again, "Stella, you don't look well. Are you feeling okay?"
I turned around. Zoe's face was very pale, her brow furrowed, and she was looking down without a word.
After a moment's thought, I said, "Is your stomach bothering you? You should take some medicine when you get home."
Zoe looked up and stared at me deeply.
I snapped back to reality and turned my head, ignoring her.
It had been a long time since she had been on my mind. Now, her gaze was like a thorn, making me restless, but I didn't turn back.
I felt a strange sense of irritation. She was the one who abandoned me for Jayce without a second thought. Now she was suddenly showing weakness in front of me, as if I owed her something.
This was all her own doing.
Soon, we reached Zoe's neighborhood. She got out of the car without a word.
When we got home, Stella and I walked into the complex together.
This time, I took her hand.
She let out a long sigh. "I thought you'd be sad for Zoe when you heard she broke up."
"Cole, you must have really liked Zoe before, right?"
Looking at Stella, I suddenly had the urge to tell her that Zoe and I had been a couple, but then I thought, that's all in the past.
If I brought it up now, there would be so much I couldn't explain.
I ruffled her hair. "Silly, all I know now is that I like you."
Stella looked down, a shy smile on her face.
We held hands and strolled around downstairs for a while before going to our respective homes.
The moment I got home, Zoe's call came.
Her first words were, "You really did sleep with Stella, didn't you?"
Strangely, my heart was completely calm. "Isn't that normal?"
Zoe was silent for a moment, then said, "Cole, I'm sorry. I regret it. I realize I don't love Jayce at all. I've been thinking about you a lot lately, about the five years we were together."
"I really regret introducing Stella to you. I was worried you would ruin things between me and Jayce, so I foolishly set you two up."
"I know you don't really like her. I hope you don't throw away your own happiness just because of something I said. You don't have to force yourself to be with Stella."
I told her, "I'm with Stella now because I like her, Zoe. It has nothing to do with you."
She was stunned. "...I don't believe you."
I thought for a moment, then added a reminder.
"When you moved out, I put the medicine I bought for you in the side pocket of your suitcase. Just take that. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up."
"Wait!"
Zoe stopped me just as I was about to hang up. "Cole, get back together with me. I don't mind that you slept with Stella…"
