Evan drafted the divorce papers for me. He patted his chest and said, "Leave it to me. When it comes to divorce, I'm the pro! I swear, I won't leave that bastard with a single pair of underwear to his name!"

I pulled the corner of my mouth into something that was supposed to be a smile.

I trusted him. After all, most of our assets were inherited from my father. The money Leo earned was mostly reinvested in his career—flying to conferences and advanced training overseas.

When I got home with the divorce papers, our son's toys were still scattered on the floor. His favorite superhero figures, the little yellow duck he had to have for bath time…

I carefully packed all of his things away. Sitting on his small bed, I called Leo again.

For the first ten minutes, no one answered. Then, finally, the call connected. "Oh, hey, Talia! It's Nina. Leo can't come to the phone right now, he's in surgery."

I was about to say I’d wait for him to call back, but she cut me off with that sickeningly sweet act of hers. "Oh, silly me, I forgot. Leo never lets anyone disturb him during surgery. But you're not just anyone, are you, Talia? I'll go get him for you right now."

Her intentions were so obvious I could practically hear the gears turning in her head over the phone.

I knew Nina’s little game.

Leo never, ever allowed anyone to interrupt him during surgery. No matter who it was. He would fly into a rage and wouldn't care who he offended.

But… I didn’t care anymore.

I waited patiently for five minutes. Then, Leo's suppressed roar came through the phone. "Talia, what the hell are you doing now? Don't you know I'm in the middle of a surgery? You have ten seconds. Spit it out!"

I let out a cold laugh. "The divorce papers are on the table. Come home and sign them."

After hanging up, I projected photos and videos of our son, from his birth to just a few days ago, onto the wall. I let them play on a loop until morning.
